When a Tree Has to Come Down

Tree removal in Laredo usually starts with a tree that has been a problem for a while: a mesquite that has leaned further toward the house every year, a live oak with a hollow trunk, an ebony planted too close to the foundation, or a palm that never came back after a freeze. Taking one down safely in a small backyard, between a roof, a fence and a power line, is mostly planning. The cutting is the short part.

Signs a tree should be removed

  • A trunk or main limb that is cracked, split or hollow for a large part of its width
  • A lean that has gotten worse, especially with soil heaving or cracking on the opposite side of the trunk
  • More than about half the canopy dead, with no new growth after a full growing season
  • Mushrooms or fungal growth at the base, which often points to root or trunk decay
  • Roots lifting a slab, a foundation edge or a septic line, where pruning roots would destabilize the tree
  • A tree growing into overhead lines or against the house with no room to prune it back

Not every one of these means removal. A dead limb can be cut out of a healthy oak, and a leaning mesquite can sometimes be reduced and kept. We will tell you which ones we would save and why.

How a takedown works on a tight lot

Where there is room, a tree can be felled in one piece toward an open drop zone. In most Laredo backyards there is not, so we remove it in sections: limbs first, lowered by rope when anything below matters, then the trunk in pieces from the top down. Mesquite wood is dense and heavy for its size, and its thorns make handling slow, so brush gets fed straight to the chipper as it comes down.

Palms are a different removal

A dead or unwanted Mexican fan palm has no limbs to lower. The work is cutting the head off and taking the trunk down in rounds. Mature fan palms can reach 60 feet or more, and the dead skirt can be heavy and hold pests, so it usually comes off first. Palm trunks are fibrous and do not chip well, so we plan on hauling them.

What happens to the wood and the stump

You choose. We can haul everything, chip the brush and leave the chips for mulch, or cut mesquite and oak into firewood lengths and stack it. The stump can be cut flush and left, or ground below grade so you can plant, pave or lay sod over it. With mesquite, grinding is the better choice if you do not want sprouts coming back from the root.

Before you remove a tree

Trees in the street right of way, on commercial property or in an HOA can come with rules of their own. If your property is in one of those situations, check with the City of Laredo or your HOA first. We ask about it during the estimate.

Dead and freeze-killed trees

Trees that did not leaf out after drought or a hard freeze, removed before brittle wood starts dropping.

Palm removal

How a Removal Goes

1. Look at the tree and what is under it

We check the trunk, lean and decay, then note the roof, fence, lines and access for equipment.

2. Written plan and price

The estimate covers the takedown method, hauling, wood and stump choices.

3. Set up and protect

Drop zones are marked, and anything that cannot move is protected or worked around with rigging.

4. Take it down

Limbs first, then the trunk, in sections where needed, with brush chipped as it comes down.

5. Clean up and walk through

Debris is raked and blown, the stump is handled as agreed, and you look it over with us.

Tree Removal Questions

How much does it cost to remove a tree in Laredo?

HomeGuide's national average for tree removal is $400 to $1,200, and many Laredo yard trees fall in the small to medium height range. Price goes up with trunk size, lean over a structure, tight access and full hauling. We put an exact figure in writing after we see it.

Is stump grinding included with tree removal?

Only if it is on the estimate. We list it as its own line so you can choose. Many people want it for mesquite, since a stump left in place tends to sprout.

Can a tree be removed if it is next to the house?

Yes. That is what sectional removal is for. Limbs and trunk sections are cut small and lowered by rope so nothing drops on the roof or walls.

Should I remove a tree that looks dead after a freeze?

Not right away in most cases. Many trees and palms recover from cold damage and push new growth in spring. Scratch a twig to look for green under the bark, and give it time unless it is leaning or dropping limbs.

What happens to the wood?

We can haul it all, leave chips for mulch, or cut mesquite and oak into firewood rounds and stack them. Keeping the wood usually lowers the hauling part of the price.
