Room to Work, and Plenty of Brush

Botines is a small, spread-out community about 5 miles north of Laredo, and tree service out here looks different from tree work in town. The 2020 census counted 149 people across about 1.9 square miles, roughly 78 people per square mile. That leaves a lot of open ground between houses, and much of it is grown over with mesquite and thorny brush.

Taking down dead trees on open land

On a big lot, a dead tree can stand for years before anyone notices it is a problem. Then it drops a limb on a fence, a pen or a parked trailer. Dead mesquite gets brittle, and the wood is hard on saws, but with room around it the tree can often be felled in one piece once we check the lean and the landing zone. Where it stands near a house, a well, a shed or a line, it comes down in sections.

Clearing fence lines and drives

The most common request on rural lots is getting brush off fence lines, gates and driveways. We cut the brush back, take out volunteer trees growing through wire, and lift the low limbs of trees along the drive so trucks and trailers can pass without scraping.

Where you want an area opened up for a pen, a garden, a parking pad or a building site, we clear it and grind or cut the stumps low so the ground can be worked.

Higher ground, more wind

Botines sits at about 719 feet, well above the river level in Laredo. Open country with little to block it means trees catch more wind, and a tree that has always grown in a thicket can fail once the brush around it is gone. When we clear around a tree you want to keep, we look at its shape and may thin the crown so it can handle the exposure.

A name with a story

The community's name comes from the Spanish word botín, meaning a boot or legging. Botines first showed up as a census place in 2000, covering 8.6 square miles. Before 2010, parts of it were split off into Bonanza Hills, Four Points, Los Veteranos II and Sunset Acres, so neighbors a short drive away may now live in a differently named place.

Heat and drought stress

Laredo-area summers bring long runs of 100-degree days and uneven rain. Trees on unwatered rural lots ride out those droughts on their own, and stressed trees drop limbs and die back from the top. A walkthrough every couple of years catches the dead tops before they fall.

Botines Questions

Can you drop a tree in one piece if there is room?

Often, yes. If the landing zone is clear and the tree is sound enough to fell safely, it is quicker than sectioning it. Dead or hollow trees sometimes need to come down in pieces anyway.

Do you clear brush around fences without cutting the wire?

We cut brush away from the fence by hand near the wire and take out trees growing through it carefully. Wire that is already embedded in a trunk may need to be cut and spliced.

Can you leave the cut wood for firewood?

Yes. Tell us before the job and we will cut the larger wood to length and stack it where you want it.
