Reclaiming Lots in an Old Boom Town

Mirando City was built fast during an oil boom and has been shrinking since, which shapes the tree service work here. The town sits about 30 miles east of Laredo on Ranch Road 649, at around 758 feet. It peaked at an estimated 1,500 people in 1929, and the 2020 census counted 222. Fewer people means more empty lots, old house sites and fence lines left for brush and trees to take over.

Clearing overgrown lots

When a lot has been empty for years, it becomes a thicket of mesquite, huisache and prickly pear. Clearing it the right way means:

  • Walking the lot first to find old foundations, wells, debris and fence remains hidden in the brush
  • Deciding which trees are worth keeping as shade
  • Cutting and chipping or hauling the rest
  • Grinding stumps in areas you want to mow, build on or park on

If you are buying or inheriting a lot here, clearing is often the first step to even seeing what you have.

Dead trees around old buildings

Trees growing against old structures can damage roofs and walls, and dead trees standing near a house are a hazard in wind. We take them down in sections where there is no room to drop them, and leave the area clean.

An oil town with no water

Oliver Winfield Killam brought in the area's first commercial oil well in April 1921 and began laying out Mirando City that September. It was one of the few Texas towns founded without a nearby water supply, and early drinking water was hauled in from Bruni. Trees here have always lived on rainfall alone, and the ones that survive tend to be tough natives. That is a good reason to keep a well-shaped native tree when clearing rather than planting something new that will need watering.

Ranch country around town

The land around Mirando City has long been ranching country for cattle and sheep. Beyond town, we clear brush along ranch roads, fence lines and pens, and remove dead trees that threaten fences or equipment.

Trimming what stays

The shade trees left after clearing usually need some work: deadwood out, low limbs lifted, and crowns thinned so they hold up in wind on newly opened ground.

Mirando City Questions

Can you clear a lot where I don't know what's under the brush?

Yes. We walk it first and clear carefully around anything we find, like old slabs, wells or debris, so nothing gets damaged or becomes a hazard.

Should I keep any trees when clearing?

Usually yes. A healthy native tree that has survived on rainfall alone is a good shade tree and needs no watering.

Do you haul away the brush?

We chip it on site or haul it, depending on volume and what you want.
