An Old Railroad Town in Cattle Country
Hebbronville has been around since 1883, which gives tree service here a mix of old town trees and working ranch land. The town grew up when the Texas-Mexican Railway built through, and it became the Jim Hogg County seat in 1913. It was once the largest cattle-shipping point in the country and is still a ranching hub, about 56 miles southeast of Laredo on State Highway 359.
Old trees in an old town
Hebbronville's downtown took shape in the early 1900s, with a theater opening in 1914 and the Viggo Hotel in 1915, so older lots near the center can hold large, aging trees. Age brings predictable problems: dead limbs high in the crown, hollow trunks, and big limbs extending over roofs that were not there when the tree was planted. We prune older trees conservatively, take out the dead and weak wood, and recommend removal only when the tree is a real hazard.
Ranch land and brush
On the ranch side, the work is mostly clearing. Brush grows over fence lines, gates, caliche roads and pens. We cut it back, remove dead trees that could fall on fences or equipment, and clear areas for new pens, barns or homesites. Larger cleared trees can be cut to firewood length and left on site if you want them.
Very hot, sometimes wet
Hebbronville's climate sits on the line between humid subtropical and hot semi-arid. About 152 afternoons a year pass 90 degrees, and the record high is 118 degrees, set July 9, 2009. Rain averages about 23.79 inches, a bit more than Laredo, but it swings widely: 42.75 inches in 1995 and just 11.52 inches the very next year. Swings like that stress trees hard, and drought years tend to leave dead tops behind.
Storm cleanup on open land
The town sits at about 548 feet on open country, and strong storms can drop limbs across roads and fences. After a storm, we clear access first so you can get in and out, then work through the damaged trees.
Stumps and regrowth
Where brush has been cut before, stumps resprout. Grinding the stumps in yards and around buildings keeps them from coming back as thickets.
