When a Storm Crosses Open Hill Country

Tree service in Ranchitos Las Lomas often follows the weather. The name means the little ranches of the hills, and the community sits at about 607 feet on 3.6 square miles of open Webb County land. With few buildings and little to slow a storm down, gusts and downbursts hit trees head on, and the damage tends to be limbs split at the fork or whole trees pushed over in soil softened by a burst of rain.

What we do after a storm

Storm cleanup is mostly about putting things in the right order: 1. Hazards first. Hanging limbs over a house, a driveway or a path come down before anything else. 2. Trees on structures. We lift and cut limbs off roofs, sheds and fences in pieces so the weight comes off evenly instead of dropping all at once. 3. Split and leaning trees. Each one gets a decision: prune it back to sound wood, or take it down. 4. Debris. Brush is chipped or hauled and larger wood cut to length.

If a tree has fallen onto a power line, stay well away and call the electric utility first. We start once the line is made safe.

Why open ground matters

Trees growing in a thicket support one another. When the brush around them is cleared, or when a neighbor's trees come down, the survivors suddenly face the full wind. Mesquite is tough wood, but its wide, low limbs act like sails, and heavy side limbs are where it tends to break. Thinning a crown before storm season lets wind pass through.

Photos for your insurance

If a tree has damaged your house or another structure, take photos before cleanup starts and check with your insurer about what they need. We give you a written description of the work done, which helps when you file.

A quiet place on the map

Ranchitos Las Lomas was first counted as a census place in 2000, when it covered 21.9 square miles. Before 2010, seven new places were formed from it, including Colorado Acres, Hillside Acres, Las Haciendas and Pueblo East. Its own population was 167 in 2020, about 46 people per square mile, so most homes have plenty of room around them and lots of tree and brush per household.

Trimming between storms

The best storm cleanup is the one you never need. Taking out dead limbs, removing one of two competing trunks while the tree is young, and shortening long side limbs over the roof all reduce what a storm can do. On these lots, we also look at trees near the well, the septic area and the drive, since those are the spots you cannot afford to block.

Ranchitos Las Lomas Questions

A storm split my mesquite down the middle. Can it be saved?

Sometimes. If one side is sound and well attached, we can remove the broken half and shape the rest. If the split runs deep into the main trunk, removal is usually the safer choice.

A tree fell on my fence. Should I cut it myself?

Trees under tension can spring when cut. If the trunk is bent or pinned, it is safer to let a crew handle it with the right cuts and rigging.

Can you haul away all the storm debris?

Yes. We chip or haul the brush and cut larger wood to length, or leave it stacked if you want to keep it.
