Getting Rid of the Stump for Good
Stump grinding in Laredo often comes down to mesquite. Cut a mesquite at the ground and leave the stump, and it often comes back as a clump of thorny sprouts from buds on the root crown. A stump also trips mowers, collects termites and takes up room where you might want a patio slab, a shed or new grass. Grinding solves all of those at once.
How grinding works
A stump grinder uses a spinning wheel fitted with carbide teeth. The operator sweeps it side to side across the stump, taking off a layer at a time, until the wood is chewed down below the surface. What is left is a hole full of wood chips mixed with soil. Large surface roots running out from the stump can be ground along their length too, where they are in the way.
How deep
For most yards, grinding several inches below grade is enough to lay sod or topsoil over the spot. If you plan a slab, a fence post or a new tree in the same place, tell us at the estimate so we go deeper or remove more of the root area. On mesquite we pay attention to the root crown, the swollen area just below ground where most sprouts start, because that is the part that needs to be gone.
Before we grind
- Utilities: buried utilities can be marked through Texas 811, and we ask for locates where a grinder will go below grade near buried lines, irrigation or a septic system
- Access: most of our grinders fit through a standard yard gate; very narrow gates or steps change the equipment and the price
- Rocks and caliche: stones, buried concrete and hard caliche are hard on grinder teeth, so we probe around older stumps before starting
The chips
Grinding a stump leaves a surprising volume of chips. You can keep them in the hole and around it as fill and mulch, or we rake them out, haul them off and leave the hole ready for topsoil. Chips settle as they break down, so a ground spot will sink over the following months if new soil is not added.
Old stumps versus fresh ones
Fresh stumps grind easily. Older ones may be partly rotten and simpler still, unless they have become a termite colony. Very old mesquite and live oak stumps can be dense and slow. HomeGuide prices stump grinding mostly by diameter, so measuring across the widest part at ground level gives a fair starting point.
After a removal or on its own
We grind stumps as part of a tree removal or as a separate visit for stumps left by someone else. Many people call when a whole yard of old stumps has built up over years.

The estimate lists each stump with its diameter and what happens to the chips.

How Stump Grinding Goes
1. Measure and check
We measure each stump, look for rocks, irrigation and buried lines, and check gate width.
2. Mark utilities
Where grinding goes near buried lines, locates are requested through Texas 811 first.
3. Grind below grade
The stump and root crown are ground down to the depth agreed on the estimate.
4. Handle the chips
Chips are left as fill or hauled, and the area is raked and blown clean.

Stump Grinding Questions
How much does stump grinding cost in Laredo?
HomeGuide's national range is $120 to $400 for the first stump, or $2 to $6 per inch of diameter, with additional stumps often $30 to $60 each. A large old mesquite or oak stump with spreading roots sits at the higher end.
Will grinding stop a mesquite from coming back?
Grinding out the stump and root crown removes most of the wood that sprouts. A few sprouts can still come from roots further out. Cut them back while they are small and they usually give up.
How deep do you grind?
Deep enough for your plans. Several inches below grade covers lawn and planting beds. For a slab, post or new tree, we go deeper and clear more of the root area.
Is stump grinding the same as stump removal?
No. Grinding chews the stump down in place and leaves roots to decay. Full removal pulls out the stump and main roots, which disturbs much more soil and costs more. Grinding is what most yards need.
What should I do with the hole?
Leave the chips to settle, or have them hauled and fill the hole with topsoil. Either way, expect some settling over the following months and add soil as needed.
