Close Quarters, Tall Palms

Rio Bravo homeowners usually call for tree service when a tree has simply outgrown the space it was given. The city sits on U.S. Highway 83 along the Rio Grande, about 16 miles south of Laredo, and it is packed tight: roughly 4,450 people on about two thirds of a square mile at the 2020 census, or around 6,860 people per square mile. On lots that size, a palm or shade tree is never far from a roof, a fence or a neighbor's yard.

Palm trimming done the careful way

If your Rio Bravo yard has a palm, it is probably the tree most likely to be trimmed wrong. The goal is to remove dead and hanging fronds, flower and seed stalks, and loose boots, while leaving the green crown alone. Cutting green fronds back to a narrow tuft, sometimes called a hurricane cut, weakens the palm and slows its recovery.

On a tall palm we work from a lift where there is room for one, or climb without spikes on a healthy palm. Spikes leave wounds in the trunk that never close.

Shade trees near small homes

A mesquite or ash planted when a house was new can spread across most of a small backyard twenty years later. On a compact lot, the work usually focuses on:

  • Raising the canopy so you can walk and park under it
  • Taking weight off limbs that hang over the roof
  • Clearing branches from the service drop to the house
  • Thinning so wind can pass through instead of loading the whole crown

Removal with no room to drop

There is rarely space in Rio Bravo to fell a whole tree. Most removals are done piece by piece, with limbs lowered on ropes and the trunk taken down in short sections. We set up so the cut wood lands in the yard, not on a carport, a fence or the street. If you want the stump gone too, grinding it below grade lets you plant grass or pour a slab over the spot later.

Built in the 1980s

Rio Bravo was founded in 1982 by developer Cecil McDonald, who also started neighboring El Cenizo, and it was incorporated as a city in 1989. A tree planted when the town was new is now about 40 years old, an age where deadwood, included bark in forks and root crowding near foundations start to show. We point out those issues on the walkthrough so you can decide what to do now and what can wait.

River-side heat and wind

The town sits at about 407 feet on the river's left bank. Summer heat in the Laredo area regularly passes 100 degrees, and rain tends to come in short, heavy bursts. Trees that have been stressed by drought drop limbs more easily when a storm cell finally rolls through, so trimming out dead and crossing branches before storm season is time well spent.

Rio Bravo is its own city with a mayor-led government, so ask the city about any rules for trees near streets or public property. For work in your yard, call (956) 633-2503 and describe the trees you want handled.

Rio Bravo Questions

Can you trim a palm that leans over my neighbor's yard?

Yes. We remove dead fronds and seed stalks from the side that hangs over and lower the debris on your side. Let your neighbor know beforehand so nobody is surprised.

Is it okay to cut all the fronds off my palm?

We do not recommend it. Palms make food in their green fronds, and stripping them weakens the tree. We remove dead and drooping fronds and leave the healthy crown.

Can you grind a stump next to a fence?

Usually. Our grinder can work close to a fence, though the last few inches right against a post may need hand work.
