Getting Old Stumps Out of Small Yards
In El Cenizo, a lot of tree service calls start with a stump. The city covers only about half a square mile, roughly 20 miles south of Laredo, and its 766 housing units sit close together. When a tree is cut down on a lot that small, the stump left behind takes up space you could use for parking, a patio, a garden or a play area. Grinding it out returns that ground to you.
How stump grinding works
A grinder uses a spinning wheel with carbide teeth to chew the stump into chips, moving side to side and working down below the soil line. On most jobs we take the stump several inches below grade, then grind out the larger surface roots nearby. You can keep the chips as mulch or have us rake them out and backfill the hole with soil.
Before we start, any buried lines near the stump need to be marked. Contact Texas 811 ahead of time so utility locates are done, and tell us about private lines such as sprinkler pipe or a buried cable to a shed.
Why not just leave it?
Mesquite stumps in particular tend to sprout again from the base. Leave one in place and it can send up a thicket of thorny shoots within a season or two. Other stumps rot slowly and draw termites, and all of them are trip hazards in a small yard. Grinding stops the resprouting problem far more reliably than cutting the shoots back each year.
Removals on tight lots
If the tree is still standing, removal on a lot this size is done in sections. Limbs come down first, lowered with ropes where they hang over a roof or wire, and the trunk is cut in short rounds. We look at where each piece will land before it is cut. When a tree leans over a neighbor's lot, we plan the job with you so we can work from your side.
A colonia that became a city
El Cenizo existed for years as an informal colonia before it was incorporated in 1989. It is now a Type C general law city run by a mayor and two commissioners. The population was 2,540 in 2020, down from 3,273 in 2010, and the census found about 11 percent of homes vacant. Vacant lots near occupied homes often fill with brush and volunteer trees, which is where clearing work comes in.
Trimming what you keep
Not every tree needs to go. Shade is valuable in a place where summers run well past 100 degrees. For trees you want to keep, we remove deadwood, lift low limbs off roofs and walkways, and thin crowded crowns so they hold up better in wind.
Call (956) 633-2503 or send photos of the stumps or trees with the form, and tell us roughly how wide each stump is.

El Cenizo Questions
How deep do you grind a stump?
Usually several inches below the soil line, which is deep enough to lay sod or topsoil over the spot. If you plan to pour concrete or set a post right there, tell us and we can go deeper.
Will a mesquite stump grow back after grinding?
Grinding below grade removes the root crown where most sprouts come from, so regrowth is much less likely. A stray shoot from a side root can be cut off if it appears.
Can you grind a stump if I cut the tree myself?
Yes. Cut it as close to the ground as you safely can and let us know the diameter.
