Tall Palms, Heavy Skirts

Palm tree trimming in Laredo mostly means Mexican fan palms: the tall, thin palms that stand over many yards in town. They are native to the Sonoran Desert in Baja California and western Sonora, handle heat well, and typically grow to around 80 feet when mature. Their habit is to keep dead fronds hanging against the trunk in a brown skirt. That skirt keeps getting longer and heavier until someone cuts it away.

Why the skirt matters

  • Pests: the space inside a dead frond skirt is shelter for rats, mice, wasps, scorpions and nesting birds
  • Weight and falling fronds: dead fronds and seed stalks eventually drop, and from 50 feet up a frond with its stiff stem is a hazard to cars, roofs and people below
  • Looks: a clean trunk under a green crown is what most people want from a palm
  • Safety for the trimmer: a skirt that has built up for years is heavy and can slide down the trunk in one piece, which is why long-neglected palms take more care and rigging to clean up

What a proper palm trim removes

We cut off brown and broken fronds, the seed and flower stalks, and fruit clusters when they are messy or near a pool or walk. Healthy green fronds stay. Cutting a palm down to a few fronds at the top, sometimes called a pineapple or hurricane cut, weakens the palm and narrows the trunk over time. HomeGuide's palm guide makes the same point: removing healthy green fronds does not help the tree and should be questioned.

Skinning the trunk

Some owners want the old leaf bases (boots) shaved off for a smooth trunk. On a fan palm that is called skinning. It is cosmetic, not a health need, and it is priced separately because it takes far more time than a frond trim.

How often

HomeGuide suggests once or twice a year for most palms. In Laredo, a trim in late spring or early summer clears the seed stalks before they drop fruit, and a light visit later in the year catches fronds browned by the summer heat.

After a freeze

Palms can look badly burned after a hard freeze, with every frond brown. The growing point at the top is what matters. If it survived, a new green spear will push out in the following weeks and months. We advise waiting for new growth before deciding whether a palm needs removal, and trimming off only the fully dead fronds in the meantime.

Other palms we trim

Besides Mexican fan palms we trim date palms, which have sharp spines at the base of each frond and heavy fruit stalks, and shorter ornamental palms in front beds and around pools.

How a Palm Trim Goes

1. Count and measure

We note each palm, its height, the size of the skirt and what is below it.

2. Price per palm

The estimate lists each palm and the work: frond trim, skirt, seed stalks or skinning.

3. Trim from the top down

Seed stalks and dead fronds come off first, then the skirt, lowered when anything below matters.

4. Haul the fronds

Palm fronds and stalks do not chip well, so we bag or load and haul them away.

Palm Tree Trimming Questions

How much does palm tree trimming cost in Laredo?

HomeGuide's national range is $100 to $650 per palm, with height being the biggest factor: $75 to $400 for 15 to 30 foot palms and $150 to $900 for 30 to 60 foot palms. Several palms in one visit lower the per-palm cost.

Should I cut off the green fronds too?

No. Green fronds feed the palm. Taking them off does not make it grow faster and can weaken it. We remove dead and broken fronds and seed stalks only.

Do palm skirts attract pests?

Yes. The dead fronds around the trunk shelter rats, mice, wasps, scorpions and birds. Removing the skirt takes away that shelter.

My palm turned brown after a freeze. Is it dead?

Not necessarily. If the bud at the top survived, new green growth will appear over the following weeks or months. Trim off the dead fronds and wait before deciding on removal.

How often should a fan palm be trimmed?

Once or twice a year keeps most fan palms clean. A tall palm that has gone years without a trim will take longer the first time.
