Opening Up Brush Country
Lot and brush clearing in the Laredo area is mostly a fight with mesquite. The land around the city is flat to hilly country of grasses, oaks and mesquite, and on many lots honey mesquite, huisache, prickly pear and other thorny shrubs have grown into thickets. Cattlemen have long regarded mesquite as a range weed for good reason: it spreads into open grassland, and a cut stem tends to come back as several. Clearing a lot well means planning for that regrowth, not just mowing it down once.
Typical clearing jobs
- Overgrown residential lots: a vacant lot or the back half of a yard grown solid with brush
- Building sites: clearing a pad area and driveway route before construction on a rural lot
- Fence lines: cutting a clear strip along a property line so a fence can be built or repaired
- Selective clearing: removing brush and small trees while keeping the best mesquite or oak for shade
- Firebreaks and access paths: opening space around structures and routes for vehicles
Selective, not scorched
On many lots the better result is to keep a few good trees. A well-shaped mesquite or live oak gives shade that would take decades to replace. We mark the trees to stay with you before work starts, clear around them, and limb them up so the area under them is usable.
Dealing with regrowth
Brush that is cut at the ground will sprout again, mesquite most of all. The options are grinding the larger stumps below grade, digging out smaller root crowns, mowing new sprouts regularly while they are small, or a combination. We talk through which approach suits your lot and budget, and what follow-up the site will need.
What happens to the brush
Thorny brush is unpleasant to haul, and there is a lot of it. It can be chipped and spread as mulch on the site, hauled away, or, for mesquite and oak trunks, cut into firewood and stacked. Burning rules differ between the City of Laredo and county land, and burn bans are common in dry weather, so we do not plan around burning without checking what is allowed at your address first.
Before clearing starts
- Boundaries: know where the lot lines are; on rural tracts, a survey or marked corners help
- Utilities: buried lines get marked through Texas 811 where we will dig or grind
- Rules: subdivisions, HOAs and the city may have requirements for clearing, especially on lots being developed, so check with them
Rural lots outside town
Much of our clearing is on larger properties in the county, such as Laredo Ranchettes and Ranchitos Las Lomas, and farther out toward Zapata, Hebbronville and Encinal, where lots are bigger and the brush is thicker.

Lot & Brush Clearing Questions
How much does it cost to clear a lot near Laredo?
HomeGuide's national figures put a quarter-acre lot at $800 to $3,000 and brush removal at $800 to $3,000 per acre. Thick mesquite with larger trunks and stump grinding pushes toward the heavy-clearing range of $4,500 to $8,000 per acre.
Will the mesquite grow back?
Some will. Mesquite resprouts from buds at and below ground. Grinding larger stumps and cutting sprouts while they are young keeps regrowth manageable.
Can you keep some trees and clear the rest?
Yes. Selective clearing is often the better result. We flag the trees to keep with you and clear around them.
Can the brush be burned on site?
Sometimes, depending on where the property is and whether a burn ban is in effect. Check the rules for your address; we plan for chipping or hauling unless burning is allowed.
Do I need a permit to clear my lot?
For a homeowner clearing brush on their own lot, often not, but development sites, subdivisions and HOAs can have their own rules. Check with the city or county office for your property before a large clearing job.
