Clearing Thornscrub Without Scalping the Lot

Most tree service work in Laredo Ranchettes starts on the ground, not up a tree. This Webb County area sits at about 591 feet, and its lots back up against the kind of thorny brush that covers much of the county: mesquite, huisache, guajillo and prickly pear. Given a few wet seasons, that brush crowds fences, swallows driveways and climbs into the shade trees you want to keep.

A place that was split into nine

In the 2000 census, Laredo Ranchettes covered 24.2 square miles and counted 1,845 people in 611 housing units. Before the 2010 census, nine smaller census areas were carved out of it, including San Carlos I and II, Tanquecitos South Acres and Los Altos, which left the Laredo Ranchettes name on just 0.6 square miles. If your deed or mail still says Laredo Ranchettes, your property may now be counted under one of those newer names. The land and the brush did not change.

What lot clearing includes

Clearing is not the same as bulldozing everything flat. We sort the lot first:

  • Keep: healthy oaks, well-shaped mesquite and any tree giving the house shade
  • Remove: dead trees, brush thickets, volunteer seedlings along fences and anything leaning toward a structure
  • Grind or cut low: stumps in areas you want to mow or drive on

The brush is cut, then chipped or hauled depending on the volume and what you want done with it.

Why selective clearing pays off

Bare dirt in South Texas blows in wind and washes out in heavy rain, and the brush grows back first. Leaving good trees and some ground cover holds the soil and keeps summer heat off the house. Mesquite kept as a shade tree and pruned up off the ground looks completely different from the same species left as a thicket.

Thorns and resprouts

Huisache and mesquite both resprout from cut stumps. On a lot you want to keep open, the stumps of those species should be ground out or treated, or the clearing will need to be repeated within a couple of years. We go over the options and the follow-up with you before the work starts.

Trimming the trees you keep

Once the brush is gone, the trees you saved usually need attention too. Low limbs that grew sideways into the thicket can be removed, deadwood cut out and the crown thinned so the tree stands up to wind on an open lot.

Laredo Ranchettes Background

  • A shrinking boundary. Laredo Ranchettes covered 24.2 square miles in 2000 but only 0.6 square miles by the 2010 census after boundary changes in Webb County.
  • Nine new places. La Coma, Laredo Ranchettes West, Los Altos, Ranchitos East, San Carlos I and II, Tanquecitos South Acres, Tanquecitos South Acres II and Pueblo Nuevo were carved from it.
  • Elevation. The area sits at about 591 feet, higher than central Laredo at about 450 feet.
  • Local vegetation. Tamaulipan thornscrub covers parts of Webb County, and the nearby Lake Casa Blanca park lists honey mesquite, huisache and guajillo as typical plants.

Laredo Ranchettes Questions

Can you clear brush but leave the big mesquites?

Yes, that is the usual approach. We cut the understory and volunteers, then prune the trees you keep so they look like yard trees instead of part of the thicket.

What happens to all the brush?

Depending on volume and access, we chip it on site or haul it away. Chips can be spread as mulch around the trees you keep.

Will the huisache come back?

It can resprout from the stump. Grinding the stumps or treating them after cutting keeps the regrowth down.
